Excerpts from Business Issues for the Self E-Publisher:

"With e-books, the idea of copyright goes beyond legal and philosophical matters and gets right down to the ability to copy a book. Most people wouldnīt take the time or spend the money to copy a 250-page printed book at their local copy shop. Itīs just not practical. With music, itīs always been a question of sound quality...With e-books it's a different story. Every copy of an e-book is identical to the first. Itīs perfectly feasable for someone to copy an e-book and distribute it in competition with the original publisher."

"Unfair as it may seem, the idea behind a story--even the plot itself--is not copyrightable. As long as the new story is written from scratch without using any of the actual words or characters from the original book, a story can be retold in new words....As an author, it's important to remember that your idea is probably less valuable than the execution of that idea. In terms of copyright, it's the execution and not the idea itself that can be protected. If more authors thought this way, we'd probably have better books."
