One
of Belo Horizonte´s more stunning galleries. Contains
contemporary works from about 150 living Brazilian
artists. Mostly lage works ranging from decorative to
minimalist to neo-expressionist. Offers a nice selection
of sculpture, including wall sculptures in metal, wood
and terra cotta. Also sells quality carpets imported from
around the world. The very friendly Dona Leda speaks
French and some English.

This
small, cafe-style gallery is run by a consortium of Belo
Horizonte´s contemporary artists -- many of whom can be
found at the tables of the ajoining coffee shop. The
gallery upstairs is part of their scotch-bar space and
contains small works from a number of the area´s
avant-gaurde artists. Curator, Lais Sobral is an
accomplished artist in her own right. Open to the public.

Macedo´s principal gallery is located about 15 minutes
from downtown and offers a top-notch selection of works
from contemporary, living, Brazilian artists -- all of
national reputation in their respective styles, which
range from Orfist to Abstract Expressionist to Op Art.
Some modern sculpture. Open to the public, but best to
call ahead.

Macedo´s second gallery is located in the upscale home
decoration center, Ponteio Lar Shopping about 15 minutes
from downtown toward Rio. This gallery offers a similar,
if smaller, selection as the principal gallery, but has
its own, separate list of artists, a few overlapping.

One
of Belo Horizonte´s most active galleries, Murilo Castro
offers a selection similar to that of Quadrum or Manuel
Macedo, with many of the same artists. Murilo also offers
some lesser-known, emerging artists along with some rare
works from famous names. Murilo Castro produces a
respected auction every few months, consisting of
primarily famous Brazilian artists. Gallery is open to
the public.

Along
with Regard Galeria, this is one of Belo Horizonte´s
more visually spectacular galleries. They have a somewhat
mixed bag of artists, ranging from emerging to well known
and from conceptural, avant-guarde styles to decorative.
Regular exhibitions. Hit and miss in terms of quality,
but contains a stock of excellent works. Mostly very
large works.

A
large space dedicated primarily to contemporary Brazilian
artists of national renoun from 1850 to 1970 and the more
classical styles of the same era (i.e., no pop or urban
art styles). Some living artists of similar styles. Tends
to be pricey, but some rare finds are avilable. Sells
mostly to collectors. A bit of a snobby scene. The
Palacio also hosts regular auctions in its upstairs
auction gallery, usually offering works from living
artists.
