Gallery Listing
This page offers a listing of Brazilian galleries. Each gallery listing contains a brief description and a summary of the types of works available. This is not a complete list, so if you have additional listings please send them my way. <go there now>

Artist Residency in Brazil
There are currently very few residency programs in Brazil for national or international artists and I would like to change that--or at least add my contribution. It is my goal to create an artist residency in the interior state of Minas Gerais (a state with a rich tradition in art since the gold rush days of the 18th century). If you are interested in supporting this program, please get in touch via email or use the form on the Contact page.

Artist Workshop and Tour of Brazil
This adventure was derived from an art workshop I provide here in Brazil for Brazilians to learn art and English. The idea is to provide a kind of miniature language exchange program for Brazilians to practice english in a real-life situation, while traveling in the Southeast Region. The art workshop is entirely in English and foreign art students (and those wanting to improve their skills) often join us from abroad. It's a wonderful experience for foreigners to meet Brazilians, learn art and travel Brazil all at the same time. We allow plenty of time for all of these activities and we have plenty of singles, so don´t be afraid to try it by yourself.

The tour is marked by incredible art in the Southeast region's best museums, galleries and private art ateliers. Artists get intense practice and workshop time with instruction, live models and beautiful landscapes. There is plenty of group discussion and free time built-in for visiting local sites (with or without your paintbrush). We enjoy delicious, abundant meals, from Brazilian breakfast buffets to savory country cooking in stone and clay pots. Artists will enjoy great Brazilian coffee and tropical fruit and get an orientation to the art market in South America, as well as shopping for great art materials at incredible prices. As the trip moves into the interior, artists get a view of a more folk style of art and art making, with visits to artist's ateliers and galleries. An orientation to art restauration from top experts is another feature of this segment. The trip concludes with an exhibition of the work produced during the tour and a wrap-up party.

How it works
Concerning the Brazil travel aspect, I like to keep things very flexible and open to allow for all tastes and preferences. You arrange your own flight into São Paulo and we take it from there. All hotels are provided, with breakfast included. Lunch and dinner are included on the first day and last day of the trip. The remaining days, you are free to explore the local offerings with you new friends and choose your favorite establishments. Of course, we make suggestions all along the way and often arrange group outings for lunch and dinner. Besides the art workshops and practice sessions (detailed below) we have a few group siteseeing tours and visits to museums and galleries.

Concerning the art workshop in Brazil aspect, we offer workshops and practice sessions throughout the day, including open-air and studio time. Some sessions are very instructional, such as the drawing and basic painting workshops--while other sessions are more hands-off and experiencial. There are always instructors present if you want coaching or critiques. We have an outing at the beginning of the trip for purchasing supplies, and there are always supply shops present if you need anything along the way. There are also a few specific art-oriented field trips, as noted above.

How to join
The next trip is being planned for April 2007. For more information, get in touch with me directly at

Art Workshops Abroad
Lais Sobral

Lais Sobra, second generation artist on her mother's side, is a true collage artist in the great tradition of Schwitters and Gris. But Sobral is firmly planted in the present day. Her compositions have a cutting-edge, urban feel to them with dark overtones that add a sense of mystery and drama. Mixing found materials, paint and paper, Sobral puts together mature pieces that transcend the media used and become, simply, great art.
