COMMODORE'S REPORT
Dave Taylor - Puffin' #177

(972) 317-6570

Just got things dried out from the July 4th cruise. It had a wet ending but was another great gathering otherwise. The water was warm enough to lounge in, but the weather wasn't too hot. Dick Hardin said if you average the strong wind of Friday with the lack of wind on Saturday, it comes out perfect for sailing. Don and Martha O'Grady had a full day of events on Saturday, ending with a fireworks display from across the lake - I understand Loe's helped with this part. And we left buried treasure, but since we did not have any old parchment for a map, Mike Kmita used his GPS. Why didn't Captain Flint think of that?

Marshall and Carol McKenzie took some of us out on the lake to get a closer view of the fireworks. On the way over, we practiced a lifejacket drill and pondered the people capacity of a V25. We finally determined that the strange sound we were hearing was lake water backing up the cockpit scuppers. The fireworks display was a great show, and it's always amazing to see the lights of hundreds of boats anchored to watch.

But there is more to life than cruising - there are racing, boats and eating. The Summer Night Racing Series is going (sometimes drifting) on with four more races this summer. Come out and enjoy the cool evenings and more leisurely pace.

The Summer Boat Show presenting our club's sailing lessons is in July, and the August general meeting is an ice cream social and weiner roast. What more could there be?

The Youngs and Peeles are cruising in the Leeward Islands, and we can't wait for them to get back, to live some of the trip through their stories and pictures. They, on the other hand, are probably in no hurry to return.

FROM THE COMMODORE'S
FIRST MATE

Our sons have furnished us with good news over the past month. Michael, our older son, was accepted by the University of Wisconsin Medical School and begins classes in August. Bryan became engaged to Candy Evans about two weeks ago. They plan a February wedding. Candy has been on a couple of cruises so many of you have met her already.

Some of the board members and/or their spouses asked for these recipes:

CREAM CHEESE DIP

4 pks. (8 oz. size) cream cheese
2 pks. Hidden Valley Ranch dressing
1 small can green chilis
1 small can chopped black olives
1 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepers

Mix with "hands" and shape into a ball.
Serve with veggies or crackers.

ANGEL FOOD CAKE DESSERT

1 angel food cake
2 pkgs 6-oz. each chocolate chips
2 tbsp sugar
3 eggs - separated
2 cups heavy cream whipped

Melt chocolate in double boiler. Add sugar and well beaten egg yolks - mix thoroughly. Remove from heat. Fold in stiff egg whites. Cool. Fold in whipped cream.

Tear cake into bite-sized pieces. Put layer of cake into buttered pan, 13x9x2. Cover with layer of chocolate mix. Dot with remaining cake and chocolate mix for a marbling effect. Place in refrigerator overnight. Cut into squares to serve.

Membership Update:
We have one new club membership. Hank Miller of Dallas just bought a Venture 21, came to our June meeting and joined. Maybe sitting next to the membership chairman had something to do with that! This brings the club membership to 67.

Fall Sailing Class & Summer Boat Show:
The Dallas Summer Boat Show is this week, July 15 - 20, Tuesday through Sunday (Monday is for setting up). While I have volunteers to fill the prime hours, the weekdays from 3 to 6 are still open to anyone who could possibly make any of those time slots. Call me! The sailing class is Septem-ber 12, 13 and 21. Cathy Young is ready to sign up boats; go ahead call her; make her day!

Cruising About:
June provided me with some wonderful evening cruises. Charlotte and I introduced my older sister, Margye, to sailing on my Venture 24 one evening on Lake Grapevine. After I handed the tiller to her; I didn't get it back for about two hours. As I slowly guided her from a run to reach to close hauled and the boat slowly tipped over to 15 degrees and 4 knots, a smile slowly grew from ear to ear on Margye's face. The sun set early into a cloud bank and then showed up again in full as it slipped below the horizon in a burning red glow. As much as I love my Tohatsu; I hated breaking the spell of that quiet evening to motor into the marina. I got the tiller back just in time to ease Sassy Lassy back into her slip.

CRUISING REPORT
Don and Martha O'Grady

Did you miss it? The "coolest" 4th of July Cruise ever. The cool air and warm water provided the most comfortable mid-summer outing anyone could recall.

Those of us that arrived on Thursday spent the evening lounging in the water and watching a beautiful fireworks show at Grandpappy's. Friday morning's winds turned out to be a bit rough - but the kids enjoyed body surfing in the waves. The wind and waves remained brisk into the evening; but weren't enough to deter anyone from enjoying the water.

Saturday was a perfect day... just enough clouds to hold back the usual July heat and light winds that left the water perfect for games. The three "million-dollar" prizes in the club's first "Anything that Floats Poker Run" were won by Tina Chilcote, Carol McKenzie, and Debbie Miller (the racers collected cards along the course -- the best poker hands won). Two teams entered the water basketball tournament that followed, and after a fierce battle (there were two brother-sister pairs on opposite sides) the championship went to the team of Nicholas Chilcote, Marshall McKenzie, and Nathan O'Grady by a score of 10-8 over Chelsea Cook, Tina Chilcote, Carol McKenzie, and Erin O'Grady.

Next up was the watermelon seed spitting contest... but things didn't turn out quite the way they were planned as Carol kept getting in the way of the seeds. The final event of the afternoon was the "Turnstick Challenge." Nathan O'Grady demonstrated the proper technique and each of the brave contestants (Nicholas Chilcote, Margie Hutchison, Carol McKenzie, and Jennie Taylor) was awarded a professional marshmallow cooking stick. The evening ended with the traditional potluck dinner and a choice of fireworks over the treetops or John and Larry on the guitar.

Sunday presented us with another cool morning and a surprise thundershower. But on the up-side... after the rain subsided, those of us that launched at Loe's did not have to deal with the usual holiday crowd.

I hope you didn't miss it. But if you did, see you on Labor Day!

26 FLEET NEWS
Steve Hanes - Miss Kitty #4976

It's been a good month for the 26 Fleet. With the summer season in full swing, most of our members are out enjoying their favorite past-times... cruising and racing.

The Youngs and Peeles just returned from a trip out west... West Indies that is. Actually, its East of here and sounds much better to say the Caribbean, but that just makes us more jealous, or is that zealous?! Land of volcanoes, coconuts, sugar, and let's see... Oh yeah, Rum! Wonder which part they enjoyed most? They picked up their Beneteau 40 in Antigua and then made several "passages" of up to 50 miles. First to St. Kits, then St. Bart and St. Martain. I'll say no more since Cathy (with a "C", that's Young not Peele) promised an article for next month.

Closer to home, several fleet members enjoyed our annual July 4th Cruise at Texoma including the Blakes, Gaberts, Hutchisons, Kmitas, Taylors and lo and behold, even R. B. and Mary Strange dropped by for a day! Wait a minute, R. B. At last report, weren't you and Mary sailing your 26 from Corpus Cristi along the coastline all the way to NYC to sail with the Tall Ships on July 4th??!! Sorry to hear you didn't make it, but glad to hear you were able to reminisce with others while enjoying our annual cruise. I understand the weather cooperated at Texoma, but since Linda and I were unable to attend, I'll say no more as I'm sure there will be plenty of details elsewhere in the Cruising news.

Speaking of July 4th and the Hutchisons, last year we visited the Valiant Yacht factory on Lake Texoma to see how the "big boys" sail. Well, on a trip to Ohio last month, Jim and Margie visited the Tartan Yacht factory on Lake Erie. Seems they like to dream and drool a lot!

On the racing front, several fleet members and others from the club participated in Dallas Race Week. I was fortunate to spend the week racing with Mike and Judy Jones on Wings. Congratulations Mike on your well-fought overall third place finish against very stiff competition! I had a great time and learned a lot! Now if I could just get The Rigg Shop to take a look at Miss Kitty for me so I can find out what's wrong with her and practice what I learned.

Other members racing or crewing in Dallas Race Week included Mickey Hicks, Debbie Miller, Sam Blake and John Vaughan sailing with Larry Featherston on Aminal; Marshall McKenzie and Rita Smith sailing with Brad Chilcote on Kris Nic; and Al Barboza, Mike and Shirley Kmita, and Traci Smith sailing with John Molstad on his J-29.

This was a great week that everyone should plan to participate in next year. The entry fee was only $50 per boat which included the 6 races with dinner for the entire crew every night. Corporate sponsors and various restaurants catered dinner and all the beer or rum you could drink each night after the race. Additionally, 70 people each paid $100 for the opportunity to "ride" during the races. This provided ample crew for those who were short-handed on various nights. All money raised went to The Helping Hands charity. Truly a fun and worthwhile event!

'Til next month......Smooth Sailing!!!

Congratulations!!!

RACING

The Summer Series is on its way. We have 13 racers with room for more. The cost is only $10.00, so make a payment and come on out. The night racing is sooooo laid back that I have been known to fall asleep trimming the sails and leaving Juanelle to fend for herself. By the way, she does very good without me, so why not sleep? The wind for Race 2 was perfect for a great sail, and I even got to fly the genoa and the spinnaker, all in the same night! Brad, as Committee Boat for Race 2, did a real good job and everything went well.

Dallas Race Week was June 22 thru 27. Congratulations to Mike Jones for his 3rd place finish in heavy competition and weird PHRF handicaps. Very good job, Mike and crew. As for the rest of us, we all had a very good time. The races this year were put on with some thought, not just for the skipper but also for the crew. This year they served food and drinks every night. My hat is off to Chandlers for a great time and a real good regatta. I am looking forward to next year.

Remember the Fall Series starts September 20th, so let's get the boats out of mothballs, wash them down, sand the bottom, paint, decal, wax, polish, fix the keels and motors, get new sails or whatever it takes, and come on out. (Did I cover everything)?

This month's Birthday Wishes go out to Paula Jensen on 7/22. Have a great day, Paula!

Please be aware that the Summer Boat Show is coming up on July 15 -20. Volunteers will be needed to man (or woman) the club's booth at The Rigg Shop's exhibit. So check your calendar and give Ray a call as to when you are available to help out. You do get in free! Also keep in mind the Ice Cream Social on August 2nd at Seis Lagos. Bring your favorite dish to share.

The BIG news is that the fleet has a new member! Hank Miller from Dallas has a 21' and joined at the last meeting. This brings the fleet up to 11: (5) 24's, (2) 22's, (3) 21's, and (1) 17.

Ed Kremer has recently put his boat 'Ad Lib' into a slip AND on a hydrohoist at Scott's Landing on Lake Grapevine. Ed has slip #227 and Ray and I have #236. Both of these are on the first pier on the outside, so stop in if you are in the neighborhood.

Bobby and Sissy Allen and Ray (I had to work!) spent a couple of days at Cedar Creek Lake. It sounds like they had a great time and had great weather plus Sissy kept them well fed! Bobby and Ray have also done another GSC race on Carroll Davis's C&C 30 "Mariah."

For those of you with internet access, there is a LiveAboard Magazine at: http://www.liveaboardmagazine.com. This a a bi-monthly on-line magazine for people who either live on their boats or spend their time dreaming about it. If you are one of those dreamers, check it out. There are a number of interesting articles and you can also sign the electronic guestbook which will notifiy you whenever a new issue or update is available.

The Coast Guard has a Boating Safety Kit available that comes with several pamphlets and consumer fact sheets that can answer any questions that you may have on boating safety, information on regulations and equipment, etc. This is available through the Coast Guard Customer Infoline at 800-368-5647. This Infoline is great for getting various types of info from boating classes, navigation rules, through to the installation of stoves. Whatever your question, this is the place to get the answer. Some of it is automated, but you also get to talk to a real person if you wish. When I ordered my safety kit, the customer service person was very helpful and friendly, even though it was early morning!

This month I would like to include something that I hope will make you all smile!

THINGS WE CAN LEARN FROM A DOG...

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

If it's a dogs life your leading... or you're working like a dog... I hope you are able to follow the above rules. Take a moment, take a breath and just enjoy being alive. SMILE!

TWENTY-FIVE JIVE
Wilma Liggett - Willy Deally #3398

Is it July already?

Last month's meeting dealing with "Man Overboard" was very good. When we got our boat, the first thing we practiced was Man Overboard, and as the owners of The Rigg Shop, when we take a new boat owner out, we do a Man Overboard drill. If you were not at the meeting, you missed a good one.

Also, we celebrated the April, May and June birthdays. I made the cake this time, and I think everyone enjoyed it. Not a crumb was left in the pan. We'll do another one in September.

I am looking forward to the Boat Show and all the support we get from the club. We have sold boats new and used from your efforts at the show and have introduced a lot of people to the great sport of sailing. By the way, because of the Boat Show, I will not be at the meeting this month.

Lake Lavon report: All ramps are open, and the lake is just beautiful and great for sailing!
