Being in a place where I am now is a good place for me. I like where I am at and hope everyone has a chance to be in the same place as I am someday, so they or you can experience what I or we are experiencing at this point in our lives. It really feels good to know that some people care so much about what is happening, and we hope that all of you know that it makes us feel better . What am I talking about, you may ask, well just let me tell you . The January meeting was great fun, and the February meeting was even more because we all shared something. I am proud to be part of the VMYC because I know that most of our members care enough to take the lead when asked.
It is spring time, and you know what that means---It's time for the "Hardin Team" to descend upon the club and ask for volunteers so we may teach our annual sailing class. Be prepared to sign up first thing at the next meeting so we can carry on the tradition of teaching some eager people who want to learn something new. They could be your next crew or next good friend and fleet member.

I would like to begin this month by welcoming our newest members to join the Venture/MacGregor Yacht Club. William and Michele Hosey, who live in Grand Prairie, sail their Venture 21 at Joe Pool Lake. William is another member who found us via the Internet and joined at the Dallas Boat Show. Carol Costello also joined in February. She sails her Venture 25 at Grapevine and lives in Arlington.
Our "newest" members are none other than Bruce Peele and son, Morgan. "New members?", you say. That’s right! This is the second membership for the Peele family. Bruce and Morgan joined so that they can race their MacGregor 25 this year while Kathy races her new MacGregor 26!
Speaking of memberships, don’t forget that it is annual renewal time! If you haven’t yet renewed your membership this year, you must do so by March 15th in order to be listed in this year’s club directory. (Insider’s tip: I’ll be on Spring Break vacation ‘til the 17th so you have a two day grace period!) So far this year, with the new members and renewals received, we have 45 memberships that are current. Also, since the March meeting is after the renewal deadline, only those members who have renewed by the 15th will be eligible for the monthly door prize drawing!
The Dallas Boat Show was a great success for signing up potential students for our annual sailing class. We had a total of 77 students signup so it looks like we should have a full class! Last I heard, The Rigg Shop already have registrations in hand for eight students. Good job members! We had a total of 38 volunteers come out and help promote our club and sailing class. I would like to express my thanks to the following members for taking time out of their busy schedules to help out at the show:
Al Barboza
Sam Blake
Brad Chilcote
Doug and Sandi Cook
George, Judith and Tracy Gabert
Al and Gina Grikis
Linda Hanes

On a personal note, I would like to thank several members for their help with my racing career! Al Barboza and Marshall McKenzie helped me temporarily rig my M26 for a spinnaker, then proceeded to loan me their spinnakers and crewed for me, along with Brad Chilcote and Scott McKenzie in the first three races of the Frostbite Series at Joe Pool Lake. Then when family tragedies and personal illness kept Marshall and Al from participating in races 4 and 5, Al again loaned me his spinnaker so that Mike Jones and Randy Gilbert could give me another lesson for those two races. And... all their expert skill and instruction resulted in our taking five first place finishes out of five races with another five races to go! So far we have lead every race from start to finish including all the "faster" racing boats!!! Thanks guys for all your help, and thanks Carol, Juanelle, Judy, and Amy for letting them help me out!
I want to point out that Forest Atkins and the rest of the members of the Lynn Creek Yacht Club have been most hospitable in continuing to invite us back to the Joe Pool races. Following the races we often hang around afterwards and visit with the other skippers and crews. They are always friendly, and this week wanted to know what we are doing to "make that boat go so much faster than its supposed to". Al is considering altering our race schedule so that we can participate in their MayDay Regatta. Maybe then we can get Marshall, Al, David, Mike, Sam, Daryl and the others with the really "fast boats" to put on a show!
Finally, I would like to say that the camaraderie that Linda and I have found in the V/MYC as we continue to build new friendships since joining only 18 months ago is truly what our club is all about. If you’re not actively participating in our club’s activities, you can not imagine the amount of pleasure that you are missing out on. Thanks, members, for continuing to help build a truly terrific organization!

Have you noticed that some warm (read that "sailing") weather hit us in February? For those of us who hibernate (don't sail) in the winter, it may be time to think about swabbing the deck, pumping the bilge, tuning the rig, stocking the cooler, and other important nautical stuff. Several members are ahead of us. Some of the racing set have been active. David Young, George Gabert, J. B. Jordan, and their winter hardy crew members went to the Houston Mid-Winters. David took first is his division. Winds Sunday were reported very high and the race was delayed.
On other waters, Steve Hanes accepted an Internet challenge to compete on Joe Pool Lake against everything except MacVentures. Steve took out an insurance policy, better known as the crew, of Al Barboza, Marshall McKenzie, Brad Chilcote, Scott McKenzie, Randy Gilbert, and Mike Jones. According to reports, the competition was left in the wake. What's more, Steve and crew were invited back to complete the last nine of a twelve race schedule. On land, Kathy Peele has taken a more intellectual approach. She took the Racing Performance class at SMU, presented by Kimo Worthington, the trainer of the all-women crew of America3. Beware, Gentlemen.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the Boat Show. We met some new people, potential MacGregor owners and club members, and signed a lot of people for sailing lessons. Remember, if we take their money. we are obligated to take them sailing, so mark the lessons dates on your calendar (April 14th and 20th).
Depending on when this issue can be published, the annual Bachelor Cruise has or has not happened. If it hasn't and you are thinking about going. ARE YOU CRAZY? If it has, I hope you had a great time.

Hi Sailors,
Sai-ling - Sai-ling....Over the bounding main....de dum de de.dum - de dum - de dum, de dum- de dum- de-dummmm (Just add your own shower music).
Under the category of "did you ever", want to tell you about a gift that keeps on giving. Well maybe. We Hope.
At the July 4 cruise last year, Kay and Donna were the proud recipients of large pink yard flamingos from our resident hatchet and pencil expert, Dale. ("Don’t do it, Dale. Just Don’t Doooooo It"... just couldn't resist saying it).
Anyway, they found a good use for the big plastic birds by sticking the birds’ metal legs into the sand next to their yard chairs. And...if you don’t know it, there is absolutely nothing better to chase fire ants away than a good watch flamingo or two. Well, maybe Charlie May with a blowtorch had something to do with that, since he was over in that area.
Well, the summer went on and Kay’s big pink flamingo found it’s next home in our back yard Carolina Jasmine bed...And as all things do sooner or later, one of the bird’s legs permanently went south for the winter.
Being true sailors, though, and with a bit of Scottish influence we said, "Why not make yard chicken into a spar chicken." What with the cost of spar flys these days, and they always seem to turn around in circles anyway. Wonder why that is?
The plot was set. First and foremost, did you ever try to find the balance point on a 1.5 foot yard flamingo? Well let me tell you, it’s not easy. And once you find it, what the heck do you do with it?
Thought we heard a high pitched scream when we melted a hole through spar chicken to insert the metal spar fly rod..and to get the thing to point toward the apparent wind, I think we’ll have to add some tail feathers to increase the coefficient of drag on the southbound end..so to speak.
At any rate, if Spar Chicken makes an appearance at all, you’ll see him (or her..gosh we never did check that out) on the 4th of July Cruise. Till then..Happy Sailing, and remember, when you see us, we're on "Island Time."

The fleet turnout at the January meeting was amazingly good. We were only missing one family from our fleet. The meeting was a good sized swap meet. I had some personal success; I came home with less than I started with. The most interesting item for me was Ron Robertson’s "lapper" - a huge, light weight 180%? jib that looked like it would almost reach back to the winches. The kicker is that this sail is ancient; predating the asymmetric spinnakers and gennakers by decades. I guess the 24's were’t light-air boats even when they were the new, state-of-the-art stuff and the lapper was someone’s answer.
Here’s Charlotte’s recipe for the pumpkin cookies served as part of the refreshments at the last meeting:
Pumpkin-Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1 large egg 1 cup canned pumpkin 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 (6-oz.) pkg. semi sweet chocolate morsels (1c)
Beat shortening at medium speed until fluffy. Gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg and pumpkin; mix well. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; add to pumpkin mixture. Stir in vanilla, chocolate morsels and pecans.
Drop dough by tablespoon onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 13 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool completely. Yield: 5 1/2 dozen.

Well, winter is almost over, I think, and all thoughts are turning to boats again. Thought about a new spinnaker, but that seems to be turning into another boat! Why not? It's easy to justify it by using the right information. It goes this way:
- You pay $1,500 for a spinnaker and hardware, and you're done.
or
- You justify a BOAT like this:
First - You decide that your boat is too small and your wife, of course, deserves to have more comfort on cruises and races. She doesn't like to go slow, don't ya know!
Then - You buy a boat. It's got to be loaded! It has a spinnaker, more goodies than you now have, it's a screamer, and of course, it's at a real good price.
Then - You sell your boat fast at the highest price imaginable.
But - What happens is that you find a boat that has some things you want and at a fair price. Then there is another that has more for a small additional cost!
Then there is another!
And another!
And another!
And then reality sets in. You figure out that your little old boat won't sell fast, and when it goes it will be at 1/2 what you thought you could get for it.
Then - You find out your house needs repairs, and you can't afford a second mortgage for that good deal boat, and you can't get a spinnaker made for another 6 months. Ah, I like my little old 22! My wife does, too! Don't ya know?
See you at the Bachelor's Cruise, or maybe I'll stay home and go on the Bachelorette Cruise. My wife likes that, too! Don't ya know?

Just a short reminder about the Spring Series that starts March 30th. The 21's and 22's have committee boat duty. Let's all turn out and have a great time, have fun, and have no accidents. There are three separate fleets to chose from, so pick one that suits your fancy, and come out and race!
The Bachelor's Cruise turned out to be a good weekend after all. Saturday was little to no wind and Sunday was warmer and a great breeze. It was so laid back that yours truly never put the jib up and we just laid back in the cockpit and let the boat go where it wanted to. The lake was all ours to use. Sam, Dale, Larry, and David had Dale's new trailer to use. Marshall, Les, and Brad had electric blankets, (and an electric heater), the rest of us used stoves to keep warm. The electric blankets take the prize for Yankee know how.
See you all on the water.
P. S. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Carol McKenzie on the loss of her mother, who passed away 2/27/96.
