COMMODORE DUET

Well, it looks like we really got off to a good start at our first meeting for the year of 1996. There were a lot of members there that haven't been seen in a couple of months or even longer. It really feels good getting back into the swing of things after being put in moth balls for a month or two. We had a good time looking and guessing what each other's treasures were laying all over the floor at the swap meet for our first meeting. Thanks, Jim, for a fun evening.

Now it's time to get busy and make our family bigger and better by getting out and talking to new and old boat owners who are maybe just a little timid or stand-offish when you tell them that you belong to a "yacht club." Don't forget to tell these people that yes we are a yacht club, but we don't own any property and are probably the only yacht club in the state like that. That's one of the reasons why we can afford to have so much fun for no or little cost. Just don't let the tax man know of this form of entertainment or they might try to tax that, too. It's being looked at in Congress at the state level right now, or it was last year. Make sure you bring the kids and the inlaws-outlaws for all of the excitement coming up this year.

February has been set aside as a food month, and that really gets my attention. If you went to the Houston Mid-Winter regatta, you probably found some neat places to eat. Sam told us that the restaurant that's called Joe Lee's in the Kema district is doing their oyster and beer thing again. A dollar for a beer and a dollar for a dozen oysters. Last time that happened, my dinner bill was around $9.00, and we only had two beers apiece. Man, what a way to go!

Don't forget to bring your favorite pot to the next meeting for more fun and excitement. Hey, Gus and Mae, glad to see you after such a long time away. And that goes for everybody else.

May the winds be in your favor.

P.S. Dale, it's a baaaaaad idea!

VICE COMMODORE'S REPORT

Steve Hanes

First, I’d like to thank all of our dedicated members who worked our exhibit at the Dallas Boat Show. We had 37 members volunteer as of this writing, and the show is still underway!!! And... your help is paying off. By the end of the second day, we already had more than half as many names signed up on our Sailing Class as we did last year at the end of the entire 10-day show! I’ll provide more details in the March Venturing.

Our club continues to grow as we have added several new members in the past couple of months. Blaine and Billie Stanga joined at the boat show after visiting our Internet Web site. They enjoy sailing their Venture 23 on Lake Grapevine with their two daughters, Bridget and Abby. Arnold and Lupe Jansen also joined this month after Arnold and I "met" on the Internet. They sail a yellow and white Venture 17!

We also had a couple of new MacGregor 26X owners join last November, courtesy of The Rigg Shop. They are Pam and Lee Crawford of Hewitt, and Terry and Sandy Smith of Quitman, which means we closed out the year with 80 memberships!

Our renewals are coming in strong to start out the new year. I received 16 renewals at our January meeting and have received 9 more in the mail since then! Those of you who haven’t gotten around to sending in your renewal yet -- please do so soon. Our club continues to grow and improve, and this is shaping up to be an outstanding year! Don’t miss out on all the camaraderie and other benefits, and make sure your renewal is received in time for publication in our annual club directory.

If you haven’t visited our Web site yet, check it out to see what you’ve been missing. Our January Venturing is now on-line for all the world to see, thanks to Marshall and Carol for sending me a copy of their file. And... who knows? You might even get to read this issue on the Net before the "snail mail" version shows up in your mailbox! Thanks Marshall and Carol for doing such an outstanding job on your first newsletter!

26 FLEET

Dave Taylor
(214) 317-6570

The sailing season must be upon us. Several members reported they took advantage of the warm weekend in mid-January to get out on the water. It was not without incident, however. Steve Hanes reports his boat is in the "clinic" with a damaged keel. Hope "Miss Kitty" has a speedy recovery.

The Frostbite Regatta was held on Saturday, January 20th, on Lake Lewisville from the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club. Steve said the winds and weather were good - 'til the last mile.

Currently there are 31 boats in the 26 Fleet. Though this number may change some when registration is complete, it is understandably the largest fleet (Roger isn't making any of the others). However, there were only 9 boats represented at the last January meeting. We'd like to see more of you, if you can make it.

New Sailor in the Fleet!

Doug and Cindy Henry have a new baby boy! Donovan Douglas was born on December 23rd and weighed 8 1/2 pounds. Congratulations!

I hereby place my order for the Bachelor Cruise - Weather like this last weekend: clear blue sky, south wind at 15, and 70 degrees.

While I was talking to Marilyn and Ron Robertson about the next meeting, I noticed they lived in Flower Mound which is adjacent to Grapevine. Since I keep my boat in a slip on Grapevine and they trailer their boat, I asked if they were interested in a day sail this weekend. (How could any sailor say no in the middle of January?)

Well, at least Ron, Charlotte, and I got out for an all too short tour of Lake Grapevine in this totally unexpected weather. We even saw another Venture! I hope they noticed my nice, new, bright white set of sails (I must have been really good last year). We caught and passed another 24-foot boat on a reach. Maybe that was because Ron was at the helm Maybe we will find out sometime. Ron mentioned maybe bringing his boat over to Grapevine for a cruise and rafting up.

In the past, probably because I keep my boat in the water, the winter months have brought along mildew problems inside. Charlotte and I painted the interior this summer and I added an "anti-mildew" agent from WalMart, and so far, no mildew!

While canvassing for the Boat Show, Jeff Tucker mentioned that his boat "Breakin' Wind" now has a spinnaker sock, which ought to add more of a challenge to the rest of us in this year's race series.

CRUISING

Sam and Donna Blake
(214) 276-0682

Have you marked your calendars yet? Remember that we have three (3) major cruises this year, and they are:
(1) Memorial Day Cruise - Lake Texoma May 25, 26, 27
(2) Fourth of July Cruise - Lake Texoma July 4, 5, 6, 7
(3) Labor Day Cruise - Lake Texoma August 31, September 1, 2

To start the cruising season, though, we have one extra cruise called the Bachelors' Cruise. The Bachelors' Cruise takes place on March 9th and 10th at Grandpappy's Point on Lake Texoma. Some of you may want to meet for breakfast at Denny's on Central Expressway (Hwy. 75) in Richardson at 8:00 a.m. and then caravan up. We will meet up at the boat slips at The Point gas docks at Grandpappy's between 11:00 a.m. and noon. At about 12:00 noon, we will be having a race, to be determined by the Race Chairman. Saturday night after the race, we will meet back at the boat slips where some of us will eat at the Point Restaurant or go to El Chico on Hwy. 75 near Denison. On Sunday morning after breakfast, we will head out about 9:30 a.m. for another sail to Soldier's Creek for lunch and then sail back to Grandpappy's to take out and head for Dallas.

This is really a great opportunity to shake the cobwebs out of your boat and find out what you need to do to get ready for the big cruises to come. I look forward to seeing ya'll on the lake at the Bachelors' Cruise on March 9th.

P.S. - DALE, IT'S A BAD IDEA!

RACING

Alfred Barboza
(214) 270-1048

I would like to sincerely THANK all the families who took the time from their busy schedules to help make the boat show a SUCCESS. GOOD JOB!!! The club appreciates all the effort shown to get new people to sign up for the sailing lessons. The sailing lessons are a real help to defer some of the expenses of the club and help to keep our dues at a low rate. Again, many thanks to all.

February 9th, 10th, and 11th are the dates of the Houston Mid-Winters. If you have never been racing "offshore," it is a great experience to race other boats other than our own. Please contact myself, Marshall McKenzie, or Sam Blake, and we will fill you in on the information that you will need to know.

Let's not forget the Bachelor Cruise on March 9th and 10th at Lake Texoma. Be prepared for the cold and you will have a great time and stay comfortable. We will have an informal race to give you a chance to try different things with your boat or sail inventory.

Remember, March 15th and 16th is the New Skippers' class and race. In the classroom section on the 15th, we will go over the "Basic Right-of-Way" rules. On Saturday we will be on the water to help the new skippers with sail trim, boat handling, and familiarize you with a few round-the-buoy races. If any skippers would like to help out, please give me a call. Help is always appreciated.

Remember my phone number is (214) 270-1048. Let me hear from you.

P.S. I heard Carol McKenzie's mother is in the hospital in critical condition. Our prayers and love are with you and for your mother to get well.

SOCIAL NEWS

Lora Featherston

Thanks to Mae Gusler, Charlotte Pryor, Jennie Taylor, and Cathy Young for bringing the refreshments in January. There are still plenty of months to sign up for.

On March 9, while the men are out doing whatever they do, the female population of the V/MYC are going out to dinner and then the bravest of us are going out for a little excursion event. If you are interested in joining us for just dinner, that's fine. Just sign up at the February meeting or give me a call. We will go somewhere nice for dinner. Let me have your vote on where.

Counting the days 'til March 9th.
