The 1995 edition of the Annual Christmas Banquet was held on the evening of December 15th in the White Rock room of the Holiday Inn in Richardson, Texas. Over 70 members, guests and past Commodores enjoyed the evening dinner party which included an awards presentation and the swearing in of officers, followed by a night of dancing and entertainment. Door prizes were drawn throughout the evening (everyone won one of the many outstanding prizes) and artist Tom Johnson was present with his original marine watercolors, prints and sketches for display and sale. Much of the artwork included Tom's original paintings of past VMYC events.
Following the Prime Rib dinner, Commodore Kathy Peele kicked off the awards banquet by having the Racing Director, Cathy Young, present trophies for all the victors in the Spring and Fall Series of races. Larry Featherston was presented the traveling Commodore's Cup as the 1995 Club Champion based on total points from the combined racing series. Congratulations Larry! See the 1995 Race Results for the order of finish and the many trophies which were presented.
Beth Hardin and Kathy next presented several special awards for all the "firsts" we had in the club this year including the first lady Commodore, first lady Racing Director, first Bachlorette Cruise, and the first "Turtle Award" presented to Mike Jones for his remarkable imitation of a turtle in the Spring Race Series. Mike was next presented the annual Sportsman Award by Charles May (last year's recipient). Mike not only took his turtle incident in stride and continued the race series, but continued to be a role model for us all as he demonstrated good sportsmanship throughout the year (while enduring much razing about the previously mentioned incident).
Kathy next called upon the outgoing 1995 Officers and Directors and awarded each with a stained glass replica of their boat. (Thank you Kathy!) Her last official duty was the swearing in of our 1996 Commodore, Larry Featherston, before turning the program over to him. Larry then took the opportunity to present Kathy with the Past Commodore's burgee along with a crystal platter as a gift of thanks from the outgoing board. Larry wrapped up the program with indroductions and the swearing in of the 1996 Officers and Board members. The remainder of the evening was comprised of several hours of dancing, refreshments, and the sharing of memories.
