| "The Presidency is like being a jackass caught in a hail
storm. Youve got to just stand there and take it." -- Lyndon Baines Johnson Johnson is just a few miles west of Fenwick Island in the southeast corner of Delaware. There isn't much to Johnson, a few homes and barns, an old cemetery, and a marker indicating that the Old Sound Methodist Church been there back in 1784. See my Sept. 22 page for more on Delaware. Dates of Presidency: 11/22/1963
- 1/20/1969 His administration was known as "The Great Society," despite nation-wide anti-war protests. |

| "We can beat all Europe with United States soldiers. Give me
a thousand Tennesseans, and Ill whip any other thousand men on the globe!" -- Andrew Jackson Jackson NJ, what a time we had with this one! Before leaving home on Sept 21to find Presidential and AWSHIDT locations, I printed maps from Mapquest.com for several of the stops named after presidents. After a quick review I figured we would grab Jackson on our way home along with US30. Hey, Mapquest said Jackson was right off US30 near Atco, NJ. WRONG!! After searching near Atco along Jackson Rd I stopped and asked for help. A clerk in a convenience store told me it was just down the road. A woman out getting her mail told me to go in the opposite direction. The third person I asked told me that Jackson was where Six Flags Great Adventure is, some 45 miles to the north, off exit 16 of I-195. Pulling out my AAA map of New Jersey confirmed this. We had to really push hard to get there before dark for the photo. I found this sign at the intersection of 571 & 528 just after dark. Dates of Presidency:
3/4/1829 - 3/3/1837 He survived the first attempt to assassinate a president. |

| "Few
men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder." -- George Washington 1779
Washington, CT. Cathy and I picked up this photo while out getting AWSHIDT signs. Located in western CT, the area around Washington is full of great motorcycling roads. We visited Washington in 2000 during the IBET. The photo here was taken along the shore of Lake Waramaug. Dates of Presidency: 4/30/1789 -
3/3/1797 George Washington was the only president to be elected unanimously. |

| "Four
score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation:
conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created
equal." -- Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address 1863
Returning to Waterford from our trip to the Boston area to see a few presidential birthplaces, we pulled off I-95 south in Pawtucket RI and headed a few miles north on 114 to the town of Lincoln, RI. Lincoln isn't on any of the maps I have, and Mapquest can't seem to locate it, however there is a sign on I-95 pointing you in the right direction. It only took a few minutes to find the post office to take the confirmation photo. Dates of Presidency: 3/4/1861 -
4/15/1865 He was the first president to be assassinated. He was shot five days after the end of the Civil War. |

| "I
like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past." -- Thomas Jefferson 1816 I took a day off work to head to Massachusetts to round up a few more Presidential and AWSHIDT points. Jefferson MA was one of my first stops. From Waterford it's about a 65 mile trip north on I-395 to Worcester MA, then a quick trip up I-190 to exit 3 to route 68 into Jefferson. 1-3/4 hours after leaving home I pulled into the Jefferson post office for this photo. Dates of Presidency: 3/4/1801 -
3/3/1809 When he became president, he had been a widower for 19 years. His daughter Martha or "Patsy" assumed the role of First Lady. |

| "The
Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and
hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments of their duties and
obligations.... This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and
affections of the people, was the real American Revolution." -- John Adams 1818. After leaving Jefferson, I headed to the north, hunting down a few roadsigns for the AWSHIDT. When I came to MA Rt 2 I turned west. It rained as I crossed the Mohawk Trail, the western section of route 2 from Greenfield to North Adams through the Berkshire mountains, but the ride was still fabulous. The rain ended just as I came down through the hairpin turn into North Adams. The sun was shining again a few miles south on Rt 8 in Adams when I found this sign. Dates of Presidency: 3/4/1797 -
3/3/1801 John Adams is the first president whose son became president. |
