| AWSHIDT and Presidential Tour Photos
Monday, September 24, 2001, Page 1 Monday morning started out bright and sunny, but the Weather Channel told of threatening storms from the west heading our way later in the day. After breakfast Cathy and I decided we could spare the time and take a look around the Leesburg area. A short ride north on 15 took us to Balls Bluff Battlefield where in October 1861, Confederate and Union solders fought along the steep banks of the Potomac River. We walked along it's two mile trail, stopping to read the interpretive signs and visit the small National Cemetery there. As we finished our tour we noticed the sky had become overcast and the humidity had increased significantly. From the battlefield we then headed west on 7 a few miles to 662 north to visit the historic village of Waterford then north 665, 688, west 672 to US 15 and across the Potomac into Maryland for our first AWSHIDT photo of the morning. |

| Crossing the Potomac River on US 15 to
Point of Rocks, Maryland we stopped to get a shot on Rt 28. The shoulder sloped away
from the roadway to a point where the Concours was in danger of tipping away from the
sidestand. Cathy took the photo of yours truly as I leaned against the bike to
prevent it from falling. Back on the bike heading north on 15 towards Frederick it began to rain lightly. As soon as we turned eastward onto I-70 the rain stopped. |

Twelve miles east of Frederick on I-70 we pulled off at exit 68 to get this picture of route 27 in Ridgeville. |
| Six miles later we again exited eastbound I-70, this time at exit 73 to grab the route 27 sign in Lisbon. |

Rt 97, Cooksville, MD |
From exit 73 to exit 76 is just three miles where we found this Rt 97 sign. While fumbling through the Concours side case for more film, a car sporting a Harley Davidson window decal pulled up to ask if we needed assistance. We thanked him for stopping, got our picture, then were on our way. |
| Eleven miles closer to Baltimore we pulled off exit 87 onto US 29. I planned on getting both 29 and 99 here but after riding west on 99 for a few miles we could not find a route marker. We saw that the weather that we rode out of in Frederick was now more menacing looking and closing in. We got our photo of US 29 just as large raindrops began to fall. |

Back on I-70 we again were ahead of the
rain. We took I-695 south of Baltimore to I-95 north. The wind was strong and
gusting as we approached the harbor tunnel making for a somewhat exciting ride in traffic.
Upon emerging from the tunnel we exited I-95 onto the Pulaski Highway US 40 for
this photo. While setting up for the shot another rider on a HD stopped and asked us
if we needed help. Again we thank another fellow motorcyclist for his concern and
are on our way. Following US 40 north we stop in Aberdeen for a bite to eat. It is there I see that the stormy weather that has dogged us all morning is passing to our south, though the wind is still very strong. It was later that evening that I learned of the severe weather, including a tornado, that had been behind us. |
