I've Been Everywhere in PA |

| 8/15/00 Tuesday Heading Home We checked in to the Days Inn in Clarion around 9:50 PM, enjoyed a frosty beer at the bar before turning in for the night. It was a little after 10:00 AM by the time we got on the road again. Our next stop was more than five hours away in New York. In order to get home around 7:00 PM we would have to stick to I-80 to Parsippany New Jersey then follow I-287 north into New York. It was another hot muggy day, riding with my visor open did little to cool my head but I felt like I would suffocate with it down. The truck traffic along I-80 is heavy, and they don't let the dust collect on them either if you know what I mean. They seemed to travel in bunches, so following them for a few miles for an opportunity to pass, we were subjected to the rough turbulence of their wake. This I found very tiring. Just before Stroudsburg I pulled into a rest area to cool down. Took a quick nap on a picnic table bench in the shade and snapped a picture of both of us before returning to the superslab. I-80 through New Jersey was like a racetrack. Everyone was moving along at about 80 mph, jockeying for position, trying to pass the guy just ahead of him. I stuck to the left lane, got behind some of the steady fast moving traffic and maintained my space. The trip through NJ was over quickly. In New York we picked up the Palisades Parkway north about six miles to 202 and into Haverstraw where we stopped at the police station for a photo op. Sat and relaxed over an early supper in a small Italian restaurant before continuing our journey home. We followed the Hudson River north on 9W to the Bear Mountain Bridge. This is my favorite place to cross the Hudson. The roadway on the east side of the river is very twisty into Peekskill, and two up, fairly challenging providing traffic is light. Cathy and I stopped at a scenic overlook to admire the view and got a passerby to take our picture. Route six from Peekskill to Brewster was a drag. By now everyone was out of work and the road was clogged with commuters trying to get home. When we finally got to I-84 the trip through Danbury to Rt. 34 then onto New Haven was uneventful. After a quick stop for gas in New Haven we spent the next hour on I-95 north to Waterford and pulled into the driveway at 8:15 PM. We didn't get all the stops we had planned, but were satisfied with the trip. Now, where do we go from here? |
