about the artist
I first began sculpting as a teen over 30 years ago. I began by taking art classes when I lived in New York and again while I attended college. After college I moved to Florida where I worked for several years as an artist at an international jewelry company called Tigre Lis. I became the Qualifications Director for the company overseeing all the artist's work, helping them improve their craft and directing quality control. Eventually it became time for me to branch out into my own business and I opened Woodland Sprites Fantasy Sculptures. I now have my artwork in many fine art galleries and gift boutiques throughout the United States. For the past 5 years my artwork has been sold at the Renaissance Festival in New York. I have had many influences that have helped me form my artistic style . From growing up in the country with the beauty of the wilderness at my back door to the formal studies I've done of the great artists and artistic styles that abound on this Earth. I especially love Art Nouveau, the Victorian era, the Renaissance and Celtic periods. Artistically these are the eras that I feel most magically celebrate women. These styles communicate the strength, intelligence, dignity, grace, understanding, compassion and of course the aesthetics and beauty connected with being female. I strive to capture these concepts in my sculptures. My specialty is fantasy. I love it because I can create without limits. I can do whatever I think is most beautiful and interesting and there are no boundaries. Fantasy allows me to use every inch of my imagination; to me that is freedom. I can get lost for hours in the creation of a sculpture, the way what is in my mind becomes reality through the clay is a source of unending joy for me. I believe that a person is as happy as he or she can create; whether it's a sculpture, painting, music or a beautifully created family or job. My wish is that everyone finds that thing that they love to do and create it to their heart's content. Best wishes, Doreen Smith
