On the Road in Montana

Libby
August 13, 2002
After our coffee on Tuesday morning, we drove to
the bottom of the Libby Dam looking for bald eagles and to take a
walk. We found an eagle perched in a dead tree. With us
standing there looking at it and pointing cameras, it soon flew
off. I'm not sure if we got a good shot of it flying, but it was
fun to watch. We walked a bit further down the road and saw a
young eagle perched in another dead tree. It was large and had a
motley colored underside. It also flew to the other side of the
Kootenai River as we walked up. The river was full of ducks and
the area below the dam was full of birds fishing. They stay there
because the fish are disoriented after spinning through the generator
turbines and are easy prey. |

| AT 11 a.m. I glanced out the back
window and saw a mother turkey with several little ones trotting at a
brisk pace across the area behind our rig. Right in the
park! Later, on the way home from dinner, we had to nearly stop
for a mother turkey and her eight chicks. The chicks were about 10
inches tall and they were so cute all clustered together by the side of
the road. I hope they got to their destination. |

Saturday – There was a car show in downtown Libby today. Must
have been 100 cars. Some of them were so nicely restored.
They closed down main street and parked the cars along it for blocks. We
enjoyed seeing them. Brought back memories of cars we used to have
and wished we'd kept. We met three other couples from the park at Becks
Restaurant for lunch. We enjoyed visiting with them. (Top) |

Sunday – We went to Yaak and back today. I think
you can't get much further north in the Montana backwoods unless you
drive on a log road. Highway 567 north out of Libby was good
two-lane road for about 9 miles, however, the other 27 miles were narrow
and winding with no center stripe, warning signs, or guard rails.
Must say though, it was blacktop although a bit rough in places.
You're really out in the wilderness on that trail. We saw some
nice cabins on the way up that road and also saw a sign stating that it
was "grizzly habitat." We were rather hoping to see
(from our truck) a grizzly, but they weren't roaming close to the
road.
Yaak had a small mercantile, two saloons, a Yaak
Mat (Laundromat), school, and at least two small churches. The
area is beautiful, but it was in the middle of the wilderness. The
main occupation must be lumbering because so much of the mountains shows
the results. Somewhat like a patchwork quilt, large squares of
clear cut or partial cut areas blanket the mountains in every
direction.
We headed east out of Yaak and stopped at the West
Fork Falls. It was a nice walk back through the pines. The warm
sunshine brought out the fresh scent of the pines. The water at the base
of the falls was a clear emerald color. Beautiful.
We returned home down Highway 37 along the
east side of Lake Koocanusa to the park.
