ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Sketch of one of Howard County's Oldest
Native Citizens
Mr. Cyrus Walker
Ballew, one of the most highly respected citizens of our county, died at
his home 10 miles south of Glasgow, on Sunday, September 25, 1910, after
a short illness caused from a fall which he received while standing in
his room. He probably suffered an attack of vertigo and fell backward,
striking his back upon a table, the effect of which was to bring on an
attack of paralysis, from which he never recovered. He had reached
the ripe old age of 91 years, 8 months and 28 days.
Mr. Ballew
is survived by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Mary Shipp.
This marriage, which proved such a long and happy one, took place January
17, 1848, at or near what is now known as Richland, sixty years ago.
Their union was blessed with eleven children, all of whom are now living.
These children are: Mrs. A.J. Amick, of Howard county; John H. Ballew,
Mexico, Mo.; William Henry Ballew, Howard county; Mrs. Rolla Davis, St.
Joseph, Mo.; C. Walker Ballew, Howard county; Irvin S. Ballew, Danville,
Washington; Robert L. Ballew, Howard county; Jos. S. Ballew, Howard county;
James L. Ballew, Howard county; Mrs. Fisher Allemang, Neosho, Mo.; E. Emmett
Ballew, Glasgow. He also had forty-six grandchildren and fifteen
great grandchildren.
Mr. Ballew's
entire life was spent on the farm 10 miles south of Glasgow, where he died.
He was a frequent visitor to Glasgow, where he was quite well known and
enjoyed the esteem of all.
He was a man
of wonderful vitality and boundless energy, despite his 91 years, moving
about with the alacrity of a man of 50, and with no signs of bodily or
mental decay. He was always a courteous, considerate and kindly man,
ready to do his full duty toward God and man. His was ever a busy
life, and he kept in touch with the affairs about him to the close of his
life. He had a pleasant smile and a warm greeting for everyone, and
his cheery, genial nature radiated good will wherever he went. He
was a kind and indulgent father and husband, always thoughtful of those
about him. With the exception of a few years spent in Carroll county,
his entire life was passed on the farm where he died.
He united with
the Christian Church some fifty years ago and has been a faithful, consistent
member ever since, always taking an active part, and for a number of years
previous to his death was an elder in the church.
Just six weeks
prior to his death, the family held a reunion at the home of his son, C.
Emmett Ballew, in Glasgow, at which time a group picture of the family
was made, of which he was very proud. The group showed his wife,
now 82 years of age; his three daughters, the oldest of whom is sixty years
of age; the eight sons, the youngest of whom is 40 years old, and himself.
Funeral services
were held Tuesday afternoon, September 26, at Richland Church, conducted
by Rev. Albert T. Fitts, of Topeka, Kas., after which the body was laid
to rest in the Richland Cemetery.
The Missourian
unites with the hundreds of friends of the family in extending sympathy
to the bereaved wife, children and relatives. 1

Harvey Emerson
Ballou
The Christian-Evangelist November
16, 1933
After nearly 55 years in the
ministry of the Churches of Christ, Harvey Emerson Ballou, minister, Christian
gentleman, soul-winner, Bible scholar extraordinary, passed peacefully
to his eternal reward, at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Carl Feerer, near Effingham, Kan. His death was due
to his advanced years and heart trouble. Had he lived a few weeks
longer he would have been 82. The date of his passing was Oct. 18.
Brother Ballou was born at New
River, VA., Nov. 24, 1851. When a small child he moved with his parents
to Somerset, Ky., where he attended the district schools. In the
fall of 1874, with one hundred dollars in his pocket, he walked one hundred
miles to Lexington, Ky., where he enrolled in the College of the Bible.
He was one of the 13 graduated in the first class in 1878. Of that
group only two are now living, B. F. Clay, address unknown, and Mark Collis,
minister emeritus, Broadway Church, Lexington, Ky. The following year he
came to Kansas, beginning his first ministry with the church at Beloit.
That same year he married Henrietta Caldwell, who preceeded him in death
on June 18, 1933. Following his pastorate at Beloit, he held numerous
other pastorates in northern Kansas and western Missouri. He came to Effingham
from Winchester 32 years ago, and since this has been
his home, although he accepted calls from
several churches in near-by communities.
Brother Ballou was the dean of
the ministers of Northeast Kansas. He did not neglect to be most
helpful to all who needed him and it is generally conceded that he had
performed more weddings and funerals than any other minister in Kansas.
One of the outstanding periods
of his life was spent as a chaplain of the Kansas State Penitentiary at
Lansing.
His principal characteristic
was humility. Pomp and splendor had no part in his life, his aim
was "not to be ministered unto but to minister."
The surviving children are:
Mrs. Lester McBride, Fort Collins, Colo.; McGarvey Ballou, Kansas City,
Mo.; Errett Ballou, Galesburg, Ill.; Mrs. Carl Feerer, Horton,
Kan. The two sons, McGarvey and Errett, were named after Brother
Ballou's beloved Bible teachers, Isaac Errett and J.W. McGarvey.
The last rites were held at the
local Presbyterian church (largest church house in town), Lord's Day Oct.
22, 1933, with the writer in charge of the services, assisted by Brothers
Hess and Wilson, other local ministers. The church was filled to
capacity with friends from surrounding towns and places where Brother Ballou
had ministered. His remains were laid to rest in the Effingham cemetery
beside those of his wife. C. W. Hildebrand.
