Mystery #2:
On a picture postcard found in Joseph Chester Ballew's family photos: ca. early 1900s.  Front: Picture of a white building with the words "BIG WELLS MERCANTILE-Co."  In front of the building is a horse and wagon, the wagon has the words "BIG WELLS MERC. CO." on the side.    Standing on the porch of the Big Wells Mercantile are four men and one female.  JC Ballew lived in Big Wells, TX, for a short time around 1912.  I doubt that
he would have moved from Sabinal to Big Wells unless he knew someone there.  These
two postcards lead me to believe there were other BALLEWs in Big Wells at the time.

Duncan BALEW.  Duncan first appears in Amelia County, VA in 1744 living between Deep and Cellar Creeks (Amelia County Tax List 1736-64).  On 1 Feb 1744/5, 228 acres on the lower side of Sandy River were surveyed for him (Amelia County 1750 Surveys, Reel 56).  In 1748, he was living above Flatt Creek.  In 1756, he sold the 228 acres to Henry LESTER for L8 as Duncond BLEW (Prince Edward DB 1, 1754-59, pg 78), and in 1759, his name is spelled Duncan BLUE (Prince Edward DB 1, pg 162b).  On 12 Mar 1753, Duncomb BLEW made oath that he came to the country from Great Britain to dwell in 1740 with Ann, his wife and Eleanor, Mary and Katherine, his children.  He was certified to take up 250 acres (CO Book 1, Amelia County, VA, 1735-1746 by GJM; pg 264a). James BALLEW left Jackson, GA, 1847-1850.  He settled in Montgomery County, TX and died before 1867.  His parents may have been Francis and Nancy BALLEW whose graves are in Banks County, GA, as is the grave of his wife, Mariah, and her parents.  The inscription on Mariah's tombstone says "Wife of J.C. BALLOU".   He signed "J. C. BALLEU" to a letter written to his daughter, Amanda, in 1850.  In 1870, when Amanda sold the TX land her father left to her, the deed book entry refers to him as J.T. Mystery #21:
Looking for my HUGHES/BALLEW connection:  Four Ballews who went to MO: Jane and Priscilla Ballew Hughes, who with their husbands, John and William Hughes, went to MO 1810-1820.  These ladies were probably born in Burke County, NC in the late 1700's.  In addition,  Reuben Ballew who married his first wife in Burke County, NC in 1830 and moved to MO by 1840, where he remarried....and William Ballew, who reputedly married Mary Hughes, a relation of John and William Hughes.
I found William for the first time on the 1860 Maries County, MO census.  He is 55y/o, a shoemaker, born in NC ca 1805.  Wife, Mary b. in KY.  His children, James and Monroe are adults who bought land in Maries County in 1859, but I cannot find them on the 1860 census.  His daughter, Ruth Ann, 17y/o, b. KY, has married John Swim and is living next door to William.  Supposedly, John Swim, James & Monroe Ballew fought for the Confederacy and left MO.  I find no trace of William before or after this 1860 census...indications are that he is probably related to the Burke County, NC group.  I have searched the KY census records but have not found a William who matches this data.

Mystery #22:
My great-grandmother, Mary A. Ballew was born 23 Aug 1861 and died 10 Aug 1883. She is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Culberson, NC, next to her husband, James Burton, Arp. "Burt", as he was known, married 2nd Harriet Anne Watson and 3rd Lillie Eliza Ballew, daughter of Stephen Dekalb and Rosanna Robertson Ballew.

In the 1870 Fannin County, GA census I found a listing for David "Dave" Ballew, his wife Esther "Easter" and one of their sons, Archibald "Arch" Ballew. Listed with them are two children, Mary b. 1861 and Easter Louisa b 1868. Other BALLEW researchers have stated that Easter Louisa was an only child....if that is so, whose child is Mary and why is she living with Arch and his parents? Arch's wife has been reported to be Arrena 'Rena" Morrow Page. She was the widow of an unknown Page. In the 1870 census, Rena is
enumerated with her mother, Harriet Morrow, in Culberson, and was listed as "Rena Page". I was told she was already married to Arch by then, so should have been "Rena Ballew". This fact makes me wonder if she really is Mary Ballew's mother....

Now I have found that Arch Ballew married a Mira A. Green in Catoosa Co. GA on 1 March 1860.   I believe she may be the mother of Mary A. Ballew.   What happened to her?   I have also received information that Mira Green married a guy named Samuel Anderson.    Did she divorce Arch and marry Samuel?    kjunfm@aol.com

I found a book in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City - a book called "Ancestral Journal of Hughes Families and Their Interlinks" by Thelma R. Johnson Nelson, by Higginson Book Company, 1994.  On page 218 the following:
I. Robert Ballew, born about 1743.  Spouse: Mary ?
II.  David Ballew, born about 1764, Cherokee Co., NC.  Spouse: Elizabeth Candy, born
      about 1768
III. David Ballew, born Jan 1, 1785, NC  Married May 2, 1817, NC  Spouse: Easter Ballew born Sept 2, 1786.  A daughter of Marion and Mattie (Hollifield) Ballew.
Then it  continues to give genealogy thru David Ballew, son of David and Easter Ballew up until the 1930's & 1940's.
At the end of these 5 pages it lists as sources: Elsie (Tanner) Newman; Bible of Ollie (Tanner) Ballew Canon; Harold and Lois (Bryden) Cochran; Dollie Mae (McDonald) Tanner, and other family members.

Has anyone any proof connecting David & Easther Ballew to their above mentioned parents (& great grandfather, Robert)?  Thank You,  G. Ballew   Ballgeoa@aol.com

Mystery #28:
Was John Wilson Ballew an Irish Huguenot from Dublin ? I first find my ancestor in the 1840 Buncombe county N.C. listed  as J. W. Boilieu (30-40) along with 2 other heads of households A. (30-40) and Obed. Boilieu  (20-30).  By the 1850 census he is still listed as J. W. Boilieu with 5 sons Wm. I. 19, Geo. M. 16, James R. 14, Rob. L. 12 (my mpp gf )  and John W. 6.  His wife is Zilla 44 and  2 daughters Susanna A. 21 and Rachel H. 17. In the 1860  census J.W. Boileiu has become Wilson Ballew 60 with wife Zillah 53, daughter Harriet 28 and son John 16 still in  the home.
In trying to trace the surname Boilieu I found a similar surname Boileau in the book Huguenot Pedigrees. This surname dates back to the 1400s in France. Jean Theophile Boileau de Castelnau listed in the 9th generation was married to Jeanne Wilson in 1781. She was the daughter of of George Wilson of Dublin. Of their 10 children they have a George Wilson b. 1793, Harriet b. 1795 and John Theophilus born about 1800. I discovered this information about 20 years ago.  I suspected at that time John Theophilus Boileau and John Wilson Ballew were one and the same or at the very least somehow related to each other.  If anyone could help me make the connection I would forever be grateful.
I have in my position a letter written Dec. 28, 1901 by Robert Lee Ballew to his son George R.Ballew. I also have the descendants of all of Robert Lees Ballew's 6 lines down to about 1975. At the present time we number in the hundreds. I would love to hear from any descendants of John Wilson Ballew's children.  Richard Allan Peterson   tibs@alltel.net
