Breeding

Many people have talked about breeding hamsters on other web sites and in the few books devoted to the subject.   I’m not going to just repeat their advice, most of which should be sound.   Instead, I intend here to outline my own Hamstery routine.  You may take or leave any of it at your discretion; but know that this is working for me and has for many years.

I’ll break the discussion up into topics as to not be confusing.. (if that is possible)

One quick word to      those who are thinking about becoming a breeder.   It takes a lot    more dedication than having a single pet..

If you’ve never had a hamster as a pet, it may be wise to start off taking care of a pet hamster.    After you have proven to yourself that you have what it takes to care for one or two pets, you’ll be in a better position to say, “yes, I am ready to spend at least an hour a day caring for hamsters.   Hamsters breed very quickly and you may find yourself with a herd like I have.   I spend on average two hours a day with my hamsters.. many more hours on the weekends and holidays.  I clean between 15 to 20 cages a week.  Then too, there are the costs involved.    My advice is not to think that you will get into breeding as a source of income.   I don’t know anyone who makes much money from hamsters except the food and equipment manufacturers who give us something to buy for our hamsters birthdays.   So expect a regular expense to be part of hamster breeding.. just like keeping a pet only a whole lot of them.
