My name is Doran. I started breeding dwarf hamsters 15 years ago. Back then, there were only Albino and Normal color coats to choose from.. and the mottled pattern I believe was available if you were lucky. Pet stores, of course, only carried the normal coat. I had always thought hamsters were interesting animals and wanted to get one of my own; but when I saw those little hamsters I knew I wanted to get involved in breeding. I suspected that there would be a boomtown of color mutation possible in a few short years. So I got my first dwarf hamsters.
I feel a little sad thinking about those first hamsters. I was not at all prepared to care for them. I thought I was; I bought books and read like a man on a mission. But the truth was there wasn’t that much in the way of information about dwarves back then. I treated them like Syrians, which I did have some professional experience with, and they didn’t like it at all. None of them ever had litters. Even after I learned what I’d done wrong, it was too late.
The next time, I was ready. Two perfect hamsters started me off into what would at times be a huge undertaking. Most of my stock to this day carries blood from those two hamsters. I did add a few more hamsters ocassional.
I started my Hamstery in San Diego. About 9 years ago I moved to Orem Utah, where I live now. Mt. Timpanogas looms very large out my window but I have to confess I love the mountains so that’s a good thing,
Four years ago my hamstery had a population of 250. This shrunk to about 80 two years ago. I’m at about 300 head right now. My big push right now is cleaning up color genes. I’m trying to produce pure colors of good type, not an easy task as most hamsters out there are mixed colors.
On my own I have been able to get Red Eyed Argente and Mottled. My mottled gene wasn't very strong for some reason so I choose not to pursue it. Still, I did get some nice collars and one really beautiful female with a blaze on her forehead. I don’t know where my argente came from. I never had any show up in 8 years of breeding then one day poof, there they were.
Some years ago, Linda Price of AAAhamsters graciously flew out and brought me some new stock to mix with my own. This was the first new hamster blood I’d added in about 8 years. So my Opal, Albino, Satin, and current mottled gene come from hamsters I purchased from her. Linda has been a big help to me as I’m sure she has to many others. Check her page from my links.
Anyway, I'll add more as it happens.
